故事的主人公是生活在森林世界中的一个矮矮胖胖的小人，人们都叫他"老雷斯"，反派是一个名叫"老万"的贪婪鬼，他肆意砍伐森林中的树木，用于制作一种叫做"Thneeds"的大家都需要的东西，以此来赚钱。为了保护森林，老雷斯多次找到老万替那些可怜的树木求情，但最终却无济于事。
